“Ronnie” is a documentary about a fifty-six-year-old truck driver who spends six days a week transporting egg yolk. I didn’t know Ronnie before I started filming. For a few days I sat beside him in the cab, watching the road pass, listening to the quiet between us. At first we were both careful, two strangers occupying the same space. But time on the road has a way of wearing that caution down. When the only things you have are the road, the hours, and each other, conversation begins to take shape. Slowly Ronnie started to talk, and I realised he was allowing me into a life I might otherwise never have seen. What interested me was not only his story but the act of telling it: how one person, closed at first, becomes available to another, an how two people can learn to risk a kind of openness in each other’s presence.
